How Long Is CDL School? A Week-by-Week Breakdown
CDL school length depends on the course and your starting point. Kingdom Trucking Academy lists a two-week in-person Class A Basic course with 40 hours of online training, and a five-day Class A Elite course. The time needed to obtain your license also includes permit preparation, eligibility checks and testing availability.
Separate the class calendar from the licensing calendar. That distinction helps you plan time away from work without expecting a CDL on a date the school cannot control.
Before the first training week
Use this preparation period to confirm your course, documents, medical certification and permit requirements. Read the state CDL manual and resolve outstanding questions about eligibility or funding. Ask when any assigned online instruction must be completed.
A commercial learner’s permit generally must be held for at least 14 days before the skills test. A five-day course does not remove that requirement. Missouri’s permit overview explicitly describes the minimum holding period.
Build a repeatable process
The first stage of a two-week learning plan should establish safe habits: identify vehicle components, explain what makes them serviceable, practice basic vehicle control and understand how the truck responds to inputs. This is an illustrative learning sequence, not a published KTA daily timetable.
Keep a short practice record. Instead of writing “backing is hard,” record the point at which you lost alignment and what correction helped. Specific observations let an instructor target the next practice session.
Connect skills under pressure
As you progress, the goal is to perform consistently rather than succeed once. Ask your instructor how inspection, maneuver practice and road work will be combined in your actual class schedule.
Useful readiness questions include:
Can I describe what I am inspecting without relying on a memorized sound?
Can I recognize when a maneuver needs a safe reset?
Can I maintain space and scan ahead while following directions?
Do I know which mistakes need more practice before testing?
Where the five-day option fits
The current course descriptions position Elite for applicants with relevant prior understanding. It is a concentrated format, so ask the school to assess your readiness. A beginner should not assume that the shortest course is the most efficient route for them.
The Basic course is listed at $4,999.99 before taxes and fees; Elite is $6,499.99 before taxes and fees. Tuition financing is advertised through Flexxbuy. Confirm the complete enrollment amount and financing terms in writing.
Build a realistic personal calendar
List permit issue date, medical appointment, any online assignments, training dates and proposed test date separately. Include travel time from your part of the Kansas City metro. Leave room for appointment changes or additional practice.
If commuting is part of your plan, review our Overland Park training and confirm the actual training address and daily arrival time before arranging travel. Build your calendar around the course you enroll in, rather than an assumed start or test date.
CDL School Length Questions
Does a two-week course mean I receive my CDL in two weeks?
Not necessarily. Permit eligibility, required training completion, testing and state issuance must all be satisfied.
Is the week-by-week sequence KTA’s official timetable?
No. It is a planning framework. Obtain the actual schedule and assigned online work from your instructor.
Is the five-day course suitable for every beginner?
No. KTA describes Elite as a course for applicants with relevant prior understanding. Discuss readiness before selecting it.
Does CDL school include online work?
KTA lists 40 hours of online training alongside its two-week in-person Basic course, with 120 hours total. Confirm assignment deadlines when enrolling.
