How Long Is a CDL Permit Valid in Kansas and Missouri?
Missouri currently issues a commercial learner’s permit for 360 days and does not renew it. For Kansas, the published instruction-permit statute describes a three-month period; confirm the commercial permit’s actual issue and expiration dates with KDOR before planning your course around that statutory wording.
Your permit, medical status, training completion and test eligibility are separate parts of the licensing timeline. Put each on your calendar rather than assuming one deadline governs everything.
Missouri: 360 days, no renewal
The Missouri Department of Revenue permit overview states that the CLP is valid for 360 days. Once it expires, applicants must complete the required knowledge testing to obtain a new CLP. Missouri also requires the permit to be held for at least 14 days before skills testing.
That long validity period provides planning room, but it does not mean you should wait until the last week to book training or a test. Appointment availability and personal schedules still matter.
Kansas: verify the issued credential
K.S.A. 8-294 describes a three-month instruction permit for the listed commercial and noncommercial vehicle classes. The reviewed KDOR CDL overview does not separately explain a current CLP expiration or renewal schedule.
Because this statutory text and permit terminology need to be applied to your actual transaction, ask KDOR to confirm the current commercial permit period, renewal or reapplication requirements and what happens if your test date falls after expiry. Do not substitute a generic internet claim that every Kansas permit lasts six months or a year.
What a permit allows
A learner’s permit supports restricted supervised practice. It does not authorize you to begin independent commercial driving. Follow the required supervision and any class or endorsement limits on your credential.
Keep your underlying license valid as well. Missouri’s permit overview specifically says the CLP must be accompanied by a valid Missouri driver license.
Build a four-date checklist
Issue date: record when the permit was issued.
First eligible test date: confirm the required holding period.
Training-completion date: verify all applicable ELDT requirements are recorded.
Expiration date: check the credential and confirm it with the state if unclear.
Add medical-certification expiry and the actual skills-test appointment. A permit can be unexpired while another prerequisite is missing.
Plan training with a margin
When discussing KTA’s course options, share the permit dates immediately. Ask how the school coordinates training and testing for Kansas and Missouri residents. If a test must be rescheduled, find out which steps would need to be repeated before paying for another appointment.
A short training course can fit within a longer licensing process. Making that process visible early reduces avoidable last-minute decisions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I renew a Missouri CLP after 360 days?
Missouri says its CLP is non-renewable. Required knowledge testing must be completed for a new permit after expiration.
What Kansas permit date should I use to book training?
Use the dates on your issued credential and confirm the applicable commercial permit rules directly with KDOR.
Does an unexpired permit guarantee I can take the skills test?
No. Holding time, medical status, training completion and other state requirements must also be satisfied.
