CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist (Printable)
Use a pre-trip checklist to build an organized inspection habit: identify the area, check the relevant condition and explain whether the vehicle is safe to operate. The printable study sheet below supports practice; your state manual, instructor and actual vehicle determine the required procedure.
Do not treat a checked box as proof that a vehicle is roadworthy. If you identify a defect, report it and follow the appropriate repair or operating decision.
How to use this practice sheet
Begin with the vehicle secured as directed by your instructor. Inspect only within your training and authorization. Do not crawl beneath unsecured equipment or perform a brake procedure you have not been taught.
For each area, write what you observed. If you cannot explain why a component matters, ask for another demonstration rather than memorizing a phrase without understanding.

Connect the sheet to the real test
Kansas publishes a modernized CDL manual with vehicle-inspection guidance. Missouri applicants should use the current state manual and commercial-driver resources. Confirm which testing system and vehicle-specific procedure apply to your appointment.
This sheet deliberately omits universal pressure readings or a one-size-fits-all brake sequence. Applying a remembered number to the wrong system is less useful than learning the correct procedure for the actual vehicle.
Practice an explanation, not a recital
Point out the item, explain the relevant condition and state what an unsafe finding means. Ask an instructor to challenge your understanding with a different example. Repeat the route until the sequence is consistent, while still observing the vehicle in front of you.
For KTA’s CDL training, ask which inspection materials match your class and test vehicle. For students considering Overland Park CDL training, confirm the test vehicle and inspection procedure before practicing. Keep this sheet alongside that instruction. The Class A Basic course is listed at $4,999.99 plus taxes and fees; tuition financing is advertised through Flexxbuy. Obtain the complete enrollment amount and provider terms before committing.
Pre-Trip Inspection Questions
Is this an official state test scoring sheet?
No. It is an original study checklist. Use the current official manual and instructor’s vehicle-specific procedure.
Can I use one brake-test sequence for every truck?
No. Procedures depend on the system and vehicle. Learn the correct sequence before practicing.
What if I find a defect?
Record and report it, then follow the applicable safety and repair decision before operation.
How should I print this checklist?
Use your browser’s Print command and select the checklist pages. Leave space for observations and instructor feedback; retain the vehicle and date fields.
