Entry-Level Driver Training, or ELDT, is the federal training framework for certain first-time CDL licenses, upgrades and endorsements. Applicants covered by the rules must complete the applicable training through listed providers before the relevant state test.
For Kansas City metro students, the key questions are who delivers the training, which components you need and how the licensing authority verifies completion.
Who is covered?
FMCSA’s driver guidance identifies first-time Class A and Class B applicants, Class B-to-A upgrades, and first-time passenger, school-bus and hazardous-materials endorsements. Applicability and exceptions depend on the credential and history; use the Training Provider Registry FAQs for the details.
The framework is not a requirement to repeat all entry-level training whenever someone already holding the same credential changes employers. Confirm your actual licensing history rather than guessing from the age of your license.
Theory and behind-the-wheel are different
For applicable Class A, Class B, passenger and school-bus routes, training includes the required theory and behind-the-wheel components. The behind-the-wheel work is practical instruction, not an online substitute for operating the vehicle. Hazardous-materials endorsement training has a different theory-focused requirement before its knowledge test.
An online package can be part of a training route, but it should not be described as replacing every hands-on requirement.
Check the provider before paying
Use the FMCSA Training Provider Registry to verify the provider and training type. Match the organization, location or delivery format and credential you intend to pursue.
Ask:
Who is responsible for theory instruction?
Who provides range and public-road training when required?
Does the listing match my required class or endorsement?
How and when will completion be reported?
Who helps resolve a reporting mismatch before testing?
A course description alone does not establish a current Registry listing. Confirm the relevant provider entry before enrollment.
Coordinate completion with the state test
Keep permit timing, training and the test appointment in the same plan. Completion must be visible through the applicable process before you can take the relevant test. Do not assume an attendance receipt is equivalent to recorded completion.
Kansas applicants can review the KDOR ELDT page. Missouri applicants should check the state’s commercial-driver guidance for how training and testing connect.
What to ask KTA
Kingdom Trucking Academy offers Class A and Class B training. Its Basic Class A course is listed at $4,999.99 plus taxes and fees, with tuition financing advertised through Flexxbuy; confirm the complete enrollment amount and provider terms. When comparing course options, ask the school to identify its current Registry listing and explain exactly how the required ELDT components are delivered and reported for your program.
If you are comparing Overland Park training, confirm which location and delivery format the Registry listing covers. Keep the answer with your enrollment records. Training format, permit holding time and state testing are separate parts of your route to a license; a short course description should explain how they fit together.
ELDT Training Questions
Can online-only ELDT replace all practical CDL training?
No. Applicable Class A, B, passenger and school-bus routes have behind-the-wheel requirements as well as theory.
Is a school’s branded curriculum proof of TPR registration?
No. Verify the relevant current listing in the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
Does everyone renewing an existing CDL need new ELDT?
Not simply because of renewal. Applicability depends on the licensing action, endorsement and relevant history.
Does ELDT completion mean I already have a CDL?
No. ELDT is a training requirement. You must still meet the applicable permit, testing and licensing requirements through your state.
